Painting Do’s and Don’ts when Selling Your Home

If you’re considering listing your home on the market, you’re probably thinking about different ways to improve its curb appeal and command a higher selling price. While the outside of your property is an important consideration, the interior of the home plays a significant role in the sale as well. After all, it’s the inside of the home that enables the buyer to visualize what it will be like for them to live there.

According to research done by some of the top realtors in the US, there are certain do’s and don’ts regarding the colors of paint to choose for certain rooms of the house. The following will help you understand what colors to use and which ones to avoid:

The Do’s:

  • DO paint bathrooms light blue – buyers will pay nearly 2% more for a home with light blue walls in the bathrooms. However, you can use clean colors such as gray, light yellow, or an off-white shade.
  • DO paint bedrooms dark blue – research has shown that buyers will pay nearly $1,500 more for a home if the bedrooms are painted a deep, dark blue since it promoted a cozy, more relaxed feeling.
  • DO paint exterior walls gray or neutral – prospective buyers find it easier to imagine what a home would be like to live in when the exterior walls are painted gray or a neutral color.
  • DO paint living rooms gray – quieter, neutral tones such as a light shade of gray are the top preference of prospective home buyers. Other colors to consider include light green, light yellow, and white.

When you’ve applied this color logic to the interior of your home, the only thing for you to decide is the type of finish to use. A matte finish will help you hide imperfections in the walls while making them look newer and more polished.

The Don’ts:

  • DON’T paint bathrooms bright green – light or neutral colors are calming whereas a bright green will repulse the prospective buyer. Bright pink, bright red, and bright yellow are other colors to avoid.
  • DON’T paint kitchens green – although greens have been trending lately, buyers dislike this color in their cooking and dining space.
  • DON’T paint living rooms blue – although certain shades of blue work for bedrooms, it shouldn’t be used in the living room. Other colors to avoid include bright green, bright yellow, and pink.
