The Advantages and Disadvantages of Painting and Staining

Beautifying and protecting a surface is all about selecting the right type of finish. In many cases, that comes down to choosing between painting and staining, two of the most popular choices out there. Are you confused? Well, both are comparable as they are usually chosen for the function they perform and the pigments of each finish. However, when you are trying to decide on the proper choice, it’s helpful to understand how they differ along with the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Paint

When you’re dealing with a non-porous surface such as a composite, fiber cement board, or any other surface that has been painted before, paint is the best choice. Paint can be applied to drywall, siding (other than cedar), or trim. Painting tends to be costlier because you have to factor in primer and surface preservatives as well as the initial cost of the paint. So, let’s compare the advantages and disadvantages.

While a painted surface is always opaque and its natural look is hidden, you benefit from a finish that is more refined and uniform. In most cases paint is more durable, less vulnerable to pressure washing and getting stripped away, and can last up to 10 years or longer than stain before you have to apply a high-quality paint. Furthermore, it requires being prepared properly.

Stain

When applied properly, stain provides a more transparent look to the surface it’s being applied to. Plus, it allows you to preserve the surface’s natural look. If you want the wood grain to stand out, use a semi-transparent stain. Conversely, if you can live with an opaque finish that hides the wood grain, a solid-colored stain would be the better choice of finish.

Stain works best on surfaces such as cedar siding, decking, decorative molding, wood fences, and wood siding. Staining also eliminates the need for a coat of primer as it can cure, penetrate, and seal the wood without it. Although stains are commonly used on wooden surfaces, certain products can be used on other materials such as concrete. Because stains are thinner than paint, they are more absorbent. It gives a nice texture and brings out the grain well.
